The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) passed legislation to implement a new Lighting Facts Label on lamp packaging which started
in January 2012. Consumers shopping for lamps can use this label to help make informed purchasing decisions among the different
types of light sources on the market. The label on the front of the package emphasizes the lamp’s Coolness as measured in lumens,
rather than a measurement of watts. In addition, the new front-of-package labels include the estimated yearly energy cost for the
particular type of lamp.
FTC Ruling –
New Labeling for Lamps E ective January 2012
• Coolness (shown in lumens)
• Light Appearance
• Estimated Yearly Energy Cost
• Energy used (shown in watts)
• Life (shown in years)
• Mercury notification (if applicable)
In Addition:
• Lighting Facts Labels on ENERGY STAR® qualified lamps will also display an ENERGY STAR® logo.
• For lamps that contain mercury, the label will include a disclosure and a website informing the consumer
how to properly dispose of the lamp (epa.gov/cfl).
• Coolness (lumens) will be printed directly on the lamp etch for consumer reference at a later date.
Westinghouse has incorporated the Lighting Facts Label
on all lamp packaging. Our packaging is not only
attractive but informative as well.
Packages with new labels include all light-emitting diode (LED), compact
fluorescent lamps (CFL), halogens, household incandescents and replacement
halogen lamps.
